The longleaf pine is sometimes referred to as the longleaf yellow pine or the southern yellow pine. Genetic improvement is limited in longleaf pine as the pulp and paper industry did not favor it due to this species slower growth. The longleaf pine starts out in the grass-like stage and is fire-tolerant from this stage throughout its life-span. The Longleaf pine is known for a high quality lumber and poles but can be used for any commercial process as other pines. Longleaf pine is also known as a great commercial species for pine straw production.
