The slash pine ranges from southern areas of South Carolina to southeastern Texas and down into the Florida Keys.  The slash pine is the third most planted species in the United States and is typically grown throughout the coastal plain. Genetic improvement in slash pine has been greatly improved over 60 years. Slash pine can be used for pulpwood, saw timber, and poles.  It is the second most desired species for pinestraw production, while yielding 4 to 5 tons of wood per acre per year. Proper genetics and silviculture put wood production over 10 tons per acre per year.
